Text and background colors

When choosing text and background colors, it is best to look at some examples to see how well the combination of the two works.  The colors shown here for text are either black (#000000), white(#FFFFFF), or a light gray(#CFCFCF).  You can see from these examples that these three color choices for text work with just about anything.  There certainly is not a problem with using an alternate color as long as it works well with the background.  For example, substituting dark blue for black would work well in most cases.

Webpage backgrounds can be a background image or a color.  The image can be a repeating pattern, a gradient, or a graphic for the entire page.  The background as a solid color can be almost any color.  The text used can have the same range of colors.  Here is a list of background colors and the hexadecimal code that can be used to specify the color.  Not all colors are shown.  There is a very good reason for this.  The total number of colors is in excess of 16 million.  You wouldn't expect us to display every color would you? Instead, we show 128 colors that are spread out across all possible colors. There is a good reason for displaying these specific 128 colors.

There are 128 colors that can be specified by using the name of the color instead of a hexadecimal code.  This can help you from having to remember the hexadecimal code.  Both backgrounds and text can use this naming scheme to specify the colors. Here you can see what these colors look like as backgrounds, and next to each one is the same color as text for the chosen background for this website. Where the background color is specified, we have chosen a text color that is easily readable. You can see that on our chosen background, not all colors work well for text.

Here is an example of possible colors, along with their hex code and RGB numbers in the range from 200 to 255 in increments of 8 (343 cells). The smaller the increment, the more cells shown, however, for a wide range and a small increment below the value of 16 the browser tends to crash (too large of a page generated). The names of "Named colors" are shown in red (if any found). Any named colors found will be listed at the end.
